A crowd that seemed to include the majority of Atmore piled into the Day Gallery on Main to meet U.S. Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Alabama) Monday.
Sessions made the visit to Atmore to meet with constituents and hear what they had to say about issues that might be affecting their everyday lives.
Sessions said to the crowd that he tries to visit all 67 counties in the state each year and always enjoys a visit to Atmore.
“Well I try to visit every county in the state every year and it’s always fun to come by here because growing up in north Monroe county I always feel at home in this part of the state,” Sessions said.
While speaking to the crowd, Sessions spoke on several subjects including the Air Force tanker contract and energy independence.
Sessions said that he is doing all he can to make sure that the tanker issue comes out as fairly as it possibly can.
He added that the U.S. needs to find a way to support itself with energy instead of depending on other countries.
“We are battling everyday to make sure that this tanker thing comes out fair and just and we believe that the best built aircraft will come from Alabama,” Sessions said. “Too much of the oil that fuels our cars and trucks is foreign and that is the greatest wealth transfer in the world, but we need to produce more here and utilize nuclear power.”
Sessions’ visit to Atmore sat well with local politicians as well who see the benefit of having a senator like Sessions.
Escambia County Commission candidate Kevin McKinley said the senator’s visit is good for the City of Atmore and that having a senator like that is always good for the state of Alabama.
“I think it’s a positive thing for the town and I believe that Sen. Sessions has done a wonderful job representing the state,” McKinley said. “He is a great Republican senator who votes with conservative values and we need more on both a state and local level.”
Atmore’s top city leader also saw great rewards from Sessions’ visit.
Mayor Howard Shell said that Sessions has always been a great friend to the City of Atmore and has helped raise a lot of money for project funding.
Shell added that the senator was one of the first people to visit the city after Hurricane Ivan and did everything he could to give assistance.
“Sen. Sessions has always been a strong supporter of Atmore and all of the major projects we are undertaking he has helped us fund,” Shell said. “He was one of the first people to take a tour of Atmore after Ivan hit and immediately brought services into town, so he has really been a godsend for Atmore.”
