A Montgomery woman was disappointed when a manila envelope containing 24 Christmas cards she'd sent to recovering American servicemen at Walter Reed Hospital was returned unopened.

But the cards -- and others -- will be delivered with the help of Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions' staff.

Marge Livingston sent the packet of Christmas cards at the suggestion of a minister she heard on the radio.

"He said it's important that we support our soldiers spiritually during the holiday season," Livingston said. "Particularly those who are sick or injured."

But the package came back unopened. She said she was told the hospital didn't have adequate staff to open all the cards to make sure they were safe to deliver to the patients.

She started making phone calls -- and on Monday got word from the office of Sessions, R-Mobile, that his staff would undertake the task of making sure the cards were safe and that they were delivered.

"That's something, that the senator is interested enough to care," Livingston said.
